Exponential Expansiveness and Complete Admissibility For Evolution Families

Connections between uniform exponential expansiveness and complete admissibility of the pair are studied. A discrete version for a theorem due to Van Minh, Räbiger and Schnaubelt is presented. Equivalent characterizations of Perron type for uniform exponential expansiveness of evolution families in terms of complete admissibility are given.     

On the Growth of Entire Functions of Exponential Type near a Straight Line

Let be a sequence of complex numbers such that as . For close to the imaginary axis, upper bounds of the indicator of a nonzero entire function of exponential type with minimal growth vanishing on is obtained. These bounds give sufficient conditions for the system of exponents to be incomplete in an unbounded domain in .     

Weighted exponential polynomial approximation

A necessary and sufficient condition for completeness of systems of exponentials with a weight in Lp is established and a quantitative relation between the weight and the system of exponential in Lp is obtained by using a generalization of Malliavin's uniqueness theorem about Watson's problem.     

On the efficiency of selection criteria in spline regression

This paper concerns the cubic smoothing spline approach to nonparametric regression. After first deriving sharp asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues of the smoothing matrix, the paper uses these formulas to investigate the efficiency of different selection criteria for choosing the smoothing parameter. Special attention is paid to the generalized maximum likelihood (GML), C _p and extended exponential (EE) criteria and their marginal Bayesian interpretation. It is shown that (a) when the Bayesian model that motivates GML is true, using C _p to estimate the smoothing parameter would result in a loss of efficiency with a factor of 10/3, proving and strengthening a conjecture proposed in Stein (1990); (b) when the data indeed come from the C _p density, using GML would result in a loss of efficiency of ; (c) the loss of efficiency of the EE criterion is at most 1.543 when the data are sampled from its consistent density family. The paper not only studies equally spaced observations (the setting of Stein, 1990), but also investigates general sampling scheme of the design points, and shows that the efficiency results remain the same in both cases.This work is supported in part by NSF grant DMS-0204674 and Harvard University Clark-Cooke Fund. Nonlinear Boundary Stabilization of Nonuniform Timoshenko Beam

In this paper, the stabilization problem of nonuniform Timoshenko beam by some nonlinear boundary feedback controls is considered. By virtue of nonlinear semigroup theory, energy-perturbed approach and exponential multiplier method, it is shown that the vibration of the beam under the proposed control actiondecays exponentially or in negative power of time t as t→∞.     

Boundary stabilization for a non‐linear beam on elastic bearings

In this paper, we study the equation under non‐linear boundary conditions which model the vibrations of a beam clamped at x=0 and supported by a non‐linear bearing at x=L. By adding only one damping mechanism at x=L, we prove the existence of a global solution and exponential decay of the energy. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Upper bounds on a two-term exponential sum*

We obtain upper bounds for mixed exponential sums of the type where p^m is a prime power with m⩾ 2 and X is a multiplicative character (mod p^m). If X is primitive or p⫮(a, b) then we obtain |S(χ,f,p ^m)| ⩽2np ^{2/3 m}. If X is of conductor p and p⫮( a, b) then we get the stronger bound |S(χ,f,p ^m)|⩽np ^m/2. On initial conditions for a boundary stabilized hybrid Euler-Bernoulli beam

On the Representations of a Number as the Sum of Three Cubes and a Fourth or Fifth Power

Let R _k (n) denote the number of representations of a natural number n as the sum of three cubes and a kth power. In this paper, we show that R ₃ (n) n ^5/9+, and that R ₄ (n) n ^47/90+, where > 0 is arbitrary. This extends work of Hooley concerning sums of four cubes, to the case of sums of mixed powers. To achieve these bounds, we use a variant of the Selberg sieve method introduced by Hooley to study sums of two kth powers, and we also use various exponential sum estimates.
